Anticipation.
The Rule 4 Draft is in four days.
The Rangers, one of three teams with two selections in Round One, will pick 26th and 29th, the latter a compensatory pick for the loss of Ian Desmond to free agency. They’ll also pick 66th overall as Round Two concludes Monday night’s portion of the three-day, 40-round event.
Pick 26 and pick 29 should land at around 8:24 p.m. and 8:40 p.m., at which point Yu Darvish should be about halfway into his start against the Astros.
Maybe at this point next year, we’ll be talking about where the Rangers’ late first-round pick is positioned, compensation for the loss of Darvish to free agency.
Maybe, instead, we’ll be breaking down how the three players Texas acquired for Darvish 11 months earlier are progressing.
Or maybe the focus will be on Darvish’s next Rangers start, as he gets set to pitch for the 14th time in 2018, and something close to his 150th time with Texas across his chest.
If it’s the first scenario, whether it’s Darvish or Jonathan Lucroy or conceivably Carlos Gomez who produces the comp pick(s), there will be more than 16 minutes separating the Rangers’ first selection that night and their second.
For now, in the meantime, Texas will play three times in Washington, before the team travels to Houston and sends David Murphy to Secaucus, New Jersey to represent the Rangers at the Draft on Monday night.
I’m looking forward to Monday night.
