The day you wrote this was the day after my own dog of over 15 years left us, on April 2. It was unbelievably sudden. He was fine, still loved running and jumping around, and then he wasn’t. From the first symptom until he was gone was 3 hours. Your story is so much like ours. This was our first male dog as well. He was a rescue of sorts. We rescued his mother off the streets when she was pregnant with him and 5 others, and her gift to us was our sweet Jack. My husband was so upset with himself for being so emotional over our loss, and then I saw your story. I went straight to him and shared your story with him. It helped him so much knowing his feelings weren’t so unusual after all. I’m so sorry you lost Cliff. It’s so hard to lose a part of your family. And the timing was so close to when we lost our Jack, it felt almost like I was reading my story through yours. Thank you for sharing your grief with us. Let your memories live on and bring you joy.

Our dogs believe they are humans just like us. When you leave them home alone and come back, in their minds when you leave, they think you’re never coming back and when you do they’re out of their minds excited every single time (YOU CAME BACK! OH MY GOD!! ) seriously that’s how they feel. Dogs are true gifts from heaven for we human beings. They were meant to be that for us, and they still are forever and ever as always will be.

So sorry for your loss. Dogs are so loving and loyal. Always ready to love us whenever we have time for them - true unconditional love. I heard a pastor say once that God gave us dogs and cats to as an example of our relationship with Him. The God is the dog - always happy to be with us whenever. We're the cat - we'll get with Him when we have time. When we get home after being out for a few hours and our dog is so excited to see us, I think of that.

I just turned 60 and have been blessed to have loving dogs by my side my whole life. It's never easy to lose them, but yet the joy they bring me for the amount of time they're with me makes it worthwhile. I type this as our 15 yr old dachshund-chihuahua mix snoozes next to me on our couch.

Sorry to ramble on. I've been a reader since the newsletter days and have never commented before, but this one really hit me.

I am so sorry! We just had our wonderful little girl pup, Kramer pass away last month. We are still smacked upside the head with sadness, but can also laugh as we share stories. The memories are what keep you going!

So sorry for your loss. Truly. Cliff sounds like he was awesome. Lost my Scout, a Rhodesian Ridgeback, at age 5 about 4.5 years ago from cancer. Still think of him often and the small shrine of photo, paw imprint and collar with tag still greets me as I pass. Three rescues have come since but none have replaced him really. I always try to talk about the grief of pet loss. Some don’t get it. It’s as real as any other grief. Blessings to you and your family.

Jamey and family, please accept my heartfelt condolences for the loss of Cliff. Even in a short time, I'm sure everyone felt the love, Cliff to you all, and you all to Cliff. We love them unconditionally, and they return it unconditionally. Cliff will be there waiting when you meet again.

I'm happy for both of you that you got to know each other. It was beautiful for both. He'll be waiting with his ball. I'm sad for those of your family and you left behind.
