I had a friend once who was wrong about a whole lot of things, but one that stands out was his absolute certainty that I’d rather watch my team suffer an intense, gut-wrenching, dramatic loss, and get that full sports experience, than not get to see a game they win.
He was always dead wrong about that. Tonight: case in point.
I teach my class at SMU on Monday nights, and by time we finished our lively discussion tonight on the ethics of legalized sports betting and got through our antitrust unit, I checked my phone and saw tonight’s final Texas-Detroit score. It’s not uncommon for me to miss the bulk of a Rangers game while teaching, but I don’t know in my 12 semesters if I’ve had one end before class did — but I guess a 5:40 local start in a game that saw one run cross the plate is enough to get that done.
