Houston is in town.
Whatever the Rangers will be over the final three-fourths of the season, now would be a pretty good time to start forging something.
I’d circled this date some time back, thinking I’d write a state-of-the-team piece, just past the quarter pole of the season, as the Astros come to town for four.
As May began to unfold, if not unravel, the temperature and the angle of (and my energy for) the idea began to wobble.
But five straight wins — two coming on the road against the team with baseball’s best record, three at home against the team with the worst — caused my perspective to pivot once again.
Because, sports.
Whether it makes any objective sense for five regular-season baseball games, or even half a month, to scramble how I feel about where this team is headed, here we are.
And whether it makes any objective sense for four games out of 162, played in the second month out of six, to feel really big and important and theater-worthy, peace be with you if, as a Rangers (or Astros) fan, you see tonight through Sunday differently. You are permitted to sports however you see fit.
As for me, I’m prepared to get emotionally clobbered, one way or the other, or both, as Texas-Houston, pitting a pair of teams each a disappointing two games over .500, plays out.
