Spoiler alert: among the changes that writing for myself once again will usher in is a whole lot more trade spitballing, mock draft speculation, and roster-building whiteboards than the publications I’ve written for (reasonably) wanted from me. Some of it will be more junk food than journalism, but one of my guiding measures for story ideas and patterns is simply: Would I want to read it? When the answer is “Yep!” — right or wrong — it’s time to sit down at the keyboard and start mapping a new entry out.
As a gesture to tonight’s kickoff of the NFL Draft, I thought I’d take another swipe at an exercise I undertook something like 15 years ago: a rundown of the best players the Rangers ever drafted in each of the first 40 rounds of MLB’s version of the event.
Secondary spoiler: Texas probably isn’t going to establish a new flagbearer in the first-round category this July. Drafting 30th is cool.
Let’s get to it.
